Car of the Month - August, 2006
1969 Camaro - owned by Greg Hunt
Car of the Month for August is Greg Hunt's 69 Camaro.
Greg (Stroker Camaro) has been racing on and off for the past 16 years, due to the usual constraints of work and money he has put about 8 years into the Camaro as it is now. The past three years has seen Greg and his wife Susan at the track virtually every weekend racing the car (or both, see below).
The Camaro is all steel, with the exception of the hood and bumper, It's finished in 2000 PT Cruiser bright silver metallic paint. Power comes from a four bolt main, 0.060 overbored 454 Chevy, fitted with a Lunati 4.250 stroke Pro crank it comes out at 496 cubic inches. Eagle rods fitted with Wiseco pistons and a Doug Herbert solid roller cam finish off the bottom end. The top end consists of Brodix cylinder heads, and an Edlebrock Victor Ram fitted with two 750 cfm Ken Jones alcohol carbs.
Fuel delivery is via a Product Engineering fuel Pump and front mounted fuel cell.
Greg has until recently always ran the car in a footbrake class but recently fitted a delay box and converted to Alcohol.
Greg has the ever popular Powerglide transmission; it's fitted with a 1.80 straight cut low gear set and a transbrake. The coupling to the engine is via an eight inch convertor from ATI.
Bringing up the rear is a Dana 60 with 5.13 gears and shafts from Moser Engineering. This being bolted up to a Chris Alston backhalf kit with Battle cruiser 4 link setup.
Disc brakes all round help to slow the car down from its regular 6.0's @ 113.
Don't underestimate Greg's capabilities with the list of brand names above, all the work done to the car has been done by himself, which includes fitting that backhalf kit and even narrowing his own axle casing, as you can see from the pictures he's also a dab hand with a spray gun having painted the car as well. As Greg quite rightly pointed out, none of this would have been possible with out the patience and support of his wife Susan. It should be noted that Susan also races with an 88 Camaro fitted with a Greg Built 388ci. A best of 6.97 at 99mph.
Susan decides the Dial in for both cars, no matter what conditions as she is very good at it and is also involved with the decisions on set up for both cars.
Greg has high hopes of dropping the car into the 5's when the weather conditions are a bit more suitable, he's a regular at Great River Road Raceway in Dyersburg Tennessee, and also Jackson Dragway.
Greg has yet to win a race in this car and he has not made the task any more easy with the changes he has recently made, a win would be nice he say's but he's not overly concerned about that or the money, He races for FUN and to be with the many good friends that he races against.
Nice car Greg.....
