Car of the Month - June, 2007
'67 Camaro SS - Owned by Jerry Hops
June’s car of the month belongs to Jerry Hops, (intocars) one of our west coast members.
Jerry’s current car is a 67SS tube chassis Camaro. The body is all steel apart from the fiberglass hood and scoop. The all up weight is 2850 lbs without driver which is pretty good as it also still retains the original glass all round.
Transmission is a Powerglide prepared by REBS Specialties with a Pro tree transbrake. A Hurst shifter with a Biondo air shifter takes care of gear changes.
Rear end is a Curry 9” Ford with a 35 spline spool and axles, gear ratio is 4.56:1 and a 1350 yoke connects this to the 3 ˝ inch driveshaft. All this connected to the chassis via a 4 link rear suspension set up.
Brakes are Strange Engineering discs all round and Q A1 shock absorbers are on all four corners. Rack and pinion steering keeps it all pointed in the right direction.
Jerry built the engine for this 9.03 @ 150 quarter miler (8.76 @152 with the happy gas) with a little help from his boss, ex Pro Stock and long time Super Stock racer Bob Lambeck. He also installed all the brakes.
Jerry has raced everything from imports to dirt bikes on his way to the current Camaro. A pretty diverse racing background for sure and there is even a picture of his car in Popular Hotrodding this month on page 136.
Future plans for the screaming red Camaro include a Tunnel Ram and a pair of 4500 Dominators and at sometime in the future his ultimate goal would be a 1071 Blower. (Go for the blower bud)..
